The Unthanks: Songs from the Shipyards Trilogy
Shows for Festival of the North East on the Tyne, Wear & Tees, supported by Port of Tyne.
In a special trilogy of shows for Festival of the North East, The Unthanks bring Songs from the Shipyards on successive days, to locations on all three North-East rivers – the Tyne, Wear, Tees. All three venues are small and early booking is advised.
Sponsored by The Port of Tyne and originally commissioned by Tyneside Cinema, Songs from the Shipyard is a beautiful and powerful audio visual work that traces the story of the shipyards through a film made by Richard Fenwick, accompanied by a new score from The Unthanks, performed live by The Unthanks.
The Tyne show will take place right on the river, in the Customs House at South Shields. The Unthanks will also present in conjunction with Port of Tyne and The Customs House, a by-invite-only afternoon performance of the film, for people from the shipyard communities, past and present. There will be two performances of the film in one evening at the beautiful but tiny Ballroom at Preston Park Museum, while the Sunderland Minster show has a late start to ensure the surroundings are cast in atmospheric darkness for sharp projection of the film. The Unthanks will perform their soundtrack live at each show.
The Festival of the North East represents a timely opportunity to celebrate the work with more performances. Songs from the Shipyards is nominated in the forthcoming Journal Culture Awards for the Arts Council Award. Most compelling and timely of all, will be the inclusion of work by the poet and songwriter Graeme Miles, who sadly passed away recently, and leaves a lasting legacy of stunning work on Teeside’s industrial life.
The Unthanks are very grateful for continued sponsorship from The Port of Tyne, who sponsored the original commission and also sponsor all three shows. The Unthanks and Port of Tyne are proud and determined to support and be involved in the Festival of the North East at this challenging time for the region’s arts. Additional sponsorship is provided by AV Arts in the form of projection equipment for the Wear and Tees shows.
