Presentation by Revd John McManners – Wearmouth and Jarrow and the Lindisfarne Gospels

The presentation will look at:

(i) the collaboration between lindisfarne and Wearmouth/Jarrow -led  by Bede and Eadfrith

(ii) the biblical scholarship of Wearmouth and Jarrow which established the so called group of Italo/Northumbrian texts

(iii) the stylistic influence of Wearmouth and Jarrow upon the gospels clligraphy  and illustration

(iv) the influence of Bede’s scholarship upon the later translation of the gospels into Anglo Saxon  by Aldred the priest during the time the gospels were in  Chester-le-Street
