We are delighted that you are considering getting married at Sunderland Minster.
In England, it is ordinarily possible to get married in a Church of England church, regardless of faith affiliation, providing that you live within the parish or have certain historic family connections to the parish. However, from 1st May 2007, Sunderland Minster became an Extra Parochial Place. As such, anyone who is married in Sunderland Minster requires a Special Licence issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This will only be granted where the couple in question are members of the Minster’s Worshipping Roll – and in order to be on the Roll you must have regularly attended worship at the Minster for six months.
What this means is that you know us and we know you really well by the time you come to be married. It also means that we are well-placed to continue to support you in your life together. Many couples have found not just a wonderful venue for one day, but a wonderful community be belong to!
The current cost of this special licence is £295 plus £5 for the swearing of the affidavit before the minister who will be conducting your marriage service. This fee is paid directly to the Faculty Office of the Archbishop. It is paid in addition to the cost of the marriage service itself. The details of this process will be explained to you when you make your wedding booking.
If you would like to be married here, you would be welcome to come along to a Sunday service and afterwards speak to one of the clergy team. Alternatively you can make an initial enquiry through our church office.
